Hi Rob,

at the end of your post you are saying you finally got the problem solved of "keeping those thin workbooks to always be up to date". Any hints on how you got it to work?

Thanks a lot Powerpivot Master
May I ask you what kind of compatibility issues you're talking about. Say I'm the only one in my company using powerpivot, with links to a datawarehouse under SQL 2005, what kind of troubles might I be exposed to ?

Thanks for any info

There actually is not much real danger here other than compatibility. Check this other blog post for the details:

May I ask you what are the major risks to work with V2. I have to say that our databases / servers are on SQL 2005 actually (sorry I'm not an IT guy, but just an user of powerpivot for my job)

I am sorry to say that a workbook upgraded to v2 cannot be downgraded to v1. If you need to continue to work with v1, you will have to re-create your workbook :(

Hi there

Thanks for your post. Overall your website rocks !

I've succesfully done what you described regarding the command prompt.
But the issue is still the same when opening a spreadhseet created with powerpivot V1 but unfortunatelly upgraded with Powerpivot V2 (before uninstalling V2). Any idea ?

Oooh! I debated asking others whether they thought this was easier to do in normal Excel but decided the post was running too long. So I am very interested in your results - both the speed of calc as well as the complexity of the formulas. Please share when ready :)

In answer to your question: CALCULATE returns an error if I don't "wrap" the first argument in a function. I don't have to use AVERAGE though - I could use MAX, MIN, etc. I find myself in this situation a lot actually - where I know there is only one row returned, and AVERAGE, MIN, MAX will all return the same answer, so I pick one - usually MAX. But in this case, if I have lots of rows in the Rates table, even I would be reluctant to "trust" that I never got more than one row from the folks maintaining the Rates table, so I picked AVERAGE rather than MAX, to "blend" results in that case.

Also, given that Leah switched from AVERAGE to MAX, it's clear that she *does* expect to return more than one row in her usage cases.
