Recent data from Zip Recruiter suggests that 2022 will be the year for changing jobs. The ongoing, global Covid challenge has shifted much of the workforce from an “in-the-office” mentality to more of a remote “the office is anywhere you are” mindset. This shift has made it possible for many current employees to expand their search parameters and explore new companies in new locations.  As a result, many companies are now facing the largest labor shortage in decades which has in turn created an applicant’s dream market.

Job market

  • People are not entering the market due to concerns regarding Covid or childcare.
  • People are leaving the job market due to retirement.
  • Some who left the job market may reenter the workforce since the financial cushions provided by the government are lessening and/or ending.

Reasons for changing career path:

  • Wages – strong demand, low supply creates wage growth with workers being forecast to maintain much of the bargaining power through 2022. A good portion of the workforce that experienced varying levels of dissatisfaction are now choosing to shop for better pay.
  • Location – A majority of people (54%) prefer a job that lets them work from home. Only about 10% of jobs currently offer that option (up from 3% pre pandemic). Employees are leaving jobs that require them to work in offices in search of remote work opportunities. At least 20% of all workers say the pandemic caused them to change the type of role they were seeking to one that permitted remote work.
  • Respect – Not surprisingly, 19% of workers said they are unhappy with how employers treated them during the pandemic. The dissatisfied could include those who burned out after being forced to work long hours to cover absent coworkers, those in stressful industries such as health care, those who lost benefits due to “Covid Cutbacks” and employees who were compelled to work a remote capable position from a crowded office due to leadership’s need for micromanagement.
  • Career change – Around 20% of job changers quit to pursue new career paths or their passions. Some simply grew tired of the low pay and health risks associated with their jobs.
  • Work-life balance – A minimum of 13% of workers quit their job because their jobs didn’t provide work-life balance.
